Ramsden & Whale background

A steel legacy since 1954

Founded in 1954, Ramsden & Whale is a family-owned specialist in steel drum reconditioning and manufacturing, based in the West Midlands. Known for adaptability and bespoke service, Ramsden & Whale continues to build upon a reputation of trust, reliability, and quality.

Stamping out energy waste: Comprehensive audit and strategic upgrades

Ramsden & Whale faced escalating energy costs in recent years, significantly affecting profitability and market competitiveness. Ageing equipment, including outdated boilers and fixed speed drive compressor, heightened energy inefficiencies, necessitating urgent strategic intervention. Collaborating with energy efficiency experts Pro Enviro through the Decarbonisation Net Zero programme, Ramsden & Whale undertook a detailed on-site audit. Pro Enviro identified key areas for improvement, recommending upgrades to modern steam generators, variable speed drive (VSD) compressor, energy-efficient LED lighting, optimised burner efficiency, air leak repairs, and automated PVC curtains for heat retention.

Strengthening margins and driving growth

Implementing Pro Enviro’s recommendations, Ramsden & Whale quickly achieved measurable benefits. Immediate behavioural changes significantly reduced energy waste at minimal cost. Major equipment investments, including advanced steam generators and compressors, are projected to save around £85,000 annually and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 120 tonnes. These improvements have also enhanced workplace conditions and reduced equipment downtime, increasing overall productivity.

The company is investing nearly £400,000 into these energy efficiency measures, supported by a £100,000 grant from Birmingham City Council. These financial savings are enabling Ramsden & Whale to reinvest in further sustainable initiatives, including solar panel installations, improved client branding, and expansion into new markets.
