During Net Zero Week, we're turning the spotlight on ourselves

During Net Zero Week, we're turning the spotlight on ourselves background

Every day we help other businesses reduce their energy bills, usage and carbon footprint and here's what that looks like at our Rugby office.

Our Rugby office runs on electricity alone. We use no natural gas on site, and since 2024 our Scope 1 emissions have been zero.

Heating is provided by air source heat pumps, installed in 2022, with hot water supplied by an electric hot water tank and an under-sink electric water heating system. LED lighting with occupancy sensors and timers were fitted across the office in 2020, cutting energy use when spaces are not in use.

On-site solar generation currently stands at 11.6 kWp and we're planning to expand the system as we install further panels across the remaining roof space.

The rest of our electricity is supplied under a REGO-backed contract - Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, which certify that the electricity supplied comes from renewable sources - so even the power we do not generate ourselves is matched with renewable certification.

All company cars are now electric and we've installed charging points for staff and clients visiting the office. Around 20% of our team now drive an electric car and we have also just started offering the Octopus Energy Salary Sacrifice EV scheme, to help more of the team make the switch.

Our Scope 1 emissions have fallen from 19.35 tonnes of CO2e in 2019 to zero since 2024. Across all three scopes, our overall carbon emissions were down 56% by 2023 against our 2019 baseline, and our emissions per employee have more than halved over the same period, from 5.58 to 2.47 tonnes of CO2e per head.

Cutting emissions has cut our costs too: lower energy consumption through improved efficiency and on-site solar generation has reduced our energy bills and insulated us from the recent volatile fuel prices.

That progress is independently validated: we hold Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approval for our own operations. And we are a certified B Corp - a commitment that goes beyond carbon, covering how our whole business performs for people, communities and the environment.

This is not a box-ticking exercise. For us, acting on carbon has been a sound business decision as much as an environmental one - it lowers costs, improves resilience and strengthens the advice we give. If we ask our clients to measure, reduce and report their emissions, we must be able to demonstrate the same discipline in our own business. That is why, during Net Zero Week, we are sharing our own performance data alongside that of our clients.
