Energy Management Systems

We help organisations achieve and maintain ISO 50001 certification for continual energy performance improvement.

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 provides a structured framework, based on the same continual improvement model as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, for organisations to systematically manage and reduce their energy use. It requires businesses to set measurable energy objectives, track performance against them, and drive ongoing improvement over time.

Rather than a one-off exercise, ISO 50001 embeds energy management into day-to-day operations, giving leadership and operational teams the tools and discipline to sustain long-term savings.

ESOS Exemption

Organisations with certified ISO 50001 coverage can use it as part of their ESOS compliance route. To avoid appointing an ESOS lead assessor, ISO 50001 must cover 100% of the organisation’s energy supplies.

Where ISO 50001 only covers part of the organisation’s energy use, the remaining consumption must be covered through another approved route, such as an ESOS energy audit. ESOS assessments must account for at least 95% of total energy consumption.

Benefits for your organisation

Cost reduction

A structured approach to monitoring and targeting identifies inefficiencies and drives sustained reductions in consumption and spend.

Lower carbon emissions

ISO 50001 supports your net-zero strategy with a measurable, auditable pathway to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Regulatory confidence

Demonstrate a proactive approach to energy governance, valued by clients, investors, insurers, and regulatory bodies.

Stakeholder credibility

Certification signals a genuine and independently verified commitment to energy performance, increasingly expected by supply chain partners.

Better data

Build reliable, auditable energy data that supports better decision-making and underpins other reporting obligations such as SECR and CBAM.

Continual improvement

The standard's cyclical framework ensures energy management stays active and embedded, not just a one-off compliance exercise.

Who is it suitable for?

ISO 50001 is most valuable for organisations where energy is a significant operational cost or where demonstrating energy governance is strategically important. It is particularly well-suited to:

Energy-intensive manufacturers, including foundries, ceramics, chemicals and food production

Large commercial or public sector organisations with multi-site operations

Businesses subject to ESOS Phase 3 looking to fulfil obligations more efficiently

Organisations with net-zero commitments requiring auditable evidence of progress

Businesses supplying into sectors where sustainability credentials are required by customers

Companies seeking grant funding that requires evidence of energy management maturity
