Love Joes, a well-established food service business based in Walsall with an energy intensive production facility which operates refrigerated units around the clock, can tackle its electricity costs after receiving a free assessment from the Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS).
By participating in the programme, Love Joes identified key areas for improvement, including recommendations to unlock a potential six-figure annual saving in energy costs and significant reduction in carbon emissions.
Established in 1993, Love Joes is a food service business which provides bespoke coated chicken products to restaurants, street food vendors, pubs, schools, leisure venues and the healthcare industry.
Love Joes supplies several government institutions and needed to understand where they were on their decarbonisation journey and how they could reduce running costs.
The company applied to the BEAS Energy Intensive programme as they were seeking professional advice on reducing energy consumption and costs plus support in developing their net-zero carbon strategies.
A pilot programme of Business Growth West Midlands (BGWM), BEAS was launched to empower small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), eligible through paying business rates within the West Midlands Combined Authority region, with the tools, insights and funding they need to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.
After registering online, Love Joes was referred to delivery partner Pro Enviro, who ran an audit which looked at equipment, lighting, heating and behavioural changes to pinpoint areas that Love Joes as a business with a site running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, could drive efficiencies.
Love Joes utilises a large refrigeration system and increased electricity costs made the use of this essential aspect of their operation extremely expensive. Not only is the refrigeration system a huge expense to the business but has a negative impact on the environment due its high energy output.
The audit recommended that the business implemented targeted energy management and metering to help them to assess system efficiencies across the business.
It is estimated that the implementation of the recommended measures could result in a significant reduction in energy consumption and a six figure cut in annual energy costs.
Under BEAS, businesses like Love Joes can apply for grant funding from £1,000 to £100,000 to invest in energy improvement measures, administered by the local authority.
